It also has most apps, but TV boxes remain a side project for Apple. Apple TV has a slick interface and Apple's usual gloss. If you buy or rent a lot of movies from Amazon, and subscribe to Prime, the Fire TV is appealing. Unfortunately, it sometimes feels like an ad for Amazon stuff more than a diverse ecosystem of apps and content. Amazon Fire TV is geared toward those who really enjoy Amazon's ecosystem, and it will quickly point you to its content. The only problem is that these don't manage storage quite as well. With its newest Chromecast, we stopped seeing the bugs and problems that used to plague the platform, and it includes basically every streaming app out there, as well as YouTube and Spotify. It's been around for years, but it just recently (in 2020) nailed the experience. Google TV, formerly called Android TV, is Google's latest streaming OS.You can also do this with Apple TV's Airplay 2 functionality, but you need an iOS or macOS device. Though that's no longer its main draw, it has the added benefit of letting you send web pages or other content directly from your smartphone (it's easiest on an Android Phone), which is sometimes quite handy. Chromecast used to eschew an interface altogether (and older models still hold true to this), but the newest version has Google TV built-in.The company survives solely on how well its streaming device platform performs. Roku also isn't made by one of the major tech companies. Plus, if you decide to switch TVs, you can just move your Roku to another TV in your house at any time. Roku is our favorite streaming OS because it has just about every streaming app there is, and setup is hassle-free.And despite its rock-bottom pricing, the device delivers a good experience and access to all popular streaming services.įinally, if you prefer Roku's style of content delivery without overwhelming choices, Apple TV 4K (2022) is the closest you can get on that front, but you'll have to shell out a pretty penny for it. At just $20, it can stream in 4K and comes with the Google TV interface. Value-conscious buyers or people on a tight budget will appreciate the Onn Google TV 4K Streaming Box. It offers 4K streaming from all popular services and can play PC games in 4K HDR via GeForce Now. It offers a modern user interface, a snappy performance, and access to its solid voice assistant.īut if you need power and versatility, it's hard to go wrong with Nvidia Shield TV Pro. Our editor's choice, the Chromecast with Google TV (4K), has a lot going for it. But if you want to switch, plenty of excellent alternative streaming devices are on the market. Roku media streamers have several advantages, with the easy-to-use interface being one of the big ones. Replace your Roku with a new media streamer The Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) makes sense if you care for a smart speaker and value hands-free access to Alexa voice commands. All these features and functionalities will set you back $140, plus the cost of an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, as one is not included in the box. You can use it to find or play content, control smart home devices, and do much more without needing a remote - something that's impossible on other Amazon Fire TV streamers. The Amazon streamer offers hands-free access to Alexa voice assistant thanks to its smart speaker internals. The HDMI input comes in handy if your TV lacks HDMI inputs. There's also an HDMI input to pass through a gaming console, router, cable TV box, or another device's output through it to the TV. Other Cube highlights include the ability to play 4K video, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support, and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity. As a result, it's quick, and you won't face any lag or slow-down. It's also the fastest and most powerful media streamer in Amazon's portfolio. The Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) differs from any of our other recommendations because it does the double duty of a media streamer and a smart speaker. Also, the Ethernet port and thread networking support is limited to the more expensive 128GB model. And you'll need an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable to fully realize its potential. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't bundle an HDMI cable in the box. The Apple TV 4K also supports all major HDR standards, including HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, and it can decode or pass through Dolby Atmos surround-sound audio format. The 3rd generation Apple TV, the latest version of the device, is considerably cheaper than its predecessors and starts at $129.įor this price, you get a powerful Apple A15 Bionic chip to keep everything running smoothly, an extremely easy-to-use user interface, a well-stocked app collection, and support for game controllers. If you are already a part of the Apple ecosystem, there is no better Roku alternative. The Apple TV 4K (3rd Gen) may be more expensive than every Roku streaming device, but it's one of the best media streamers on the market, if not the best. $148 at Amazon $150 at B&H Photo Video $130 at Best Buy

Symptoms of infection include dry, brown, irregular spots on leaves, curling foliage, and defoliation. Trees with significant dieback will be difficult to save.įor more information on two-lined chestnut borer: See UW-Extension bulletin A2902 or contact your county Extension agent. How to Identify and Manage 5 Common Chestnut Tree DiseasesĪ common disease in oak trees and other varieties of deciduous hardwoods, chestnuts may be affected by anthracnose as well. These products are best applied by a professional arborist. Systemic insecticides that are applied to trees by drenching or injection (e.g., those containing imidacloprid) can also be used for control. Cover all oak woodpiles with plastic tarps from mid-May through mid-July to limit borer movement. Remove and dispose of any two-lined chestnut borer-infested wood before beetles emerge in mid-May. Also avoid damaging the bark or allowing significant defoliation by insects such as gypsy moth, canker worm, or forest tent caterpillar. Avoid compacting soil, or changing the soil grade or water drainage pattern during construction. Water oaks (approximately one inch of water per week) during dry periods to minimize drought stress. Healthy, non-stressed trees will not attract two-lined chestnut borer adults, and vigorous trees are able to fight off invading borers. There is one generation of two-lined chestnut borer per year.Ĭontrol: The best defense against two-lined chestnut borer is prevention. Larvae feed in cambial tissue and cut off the vessels that transport food and water in the tree. Eggs are inserted into bark crevices and hatch in one to two weeks. Adult beetles emerge from trees through D-shaped holes in late May and are active until early July. Life Cycle: Two-lined chestnut borers overwinter as larvae and pupae in infested trees. Look for slender, whitish larvae and thin, random, feeding galleries (trails) under the bark. To confirm chestnut borer activity, peel away the bark on dead or dying branches or trunks. Death of a tree due to a two-lined chestnut borer infestation may take from one to five years. This girdles and kills the branches above the point of feeding. Leaf browning, and twig and branch death occur when two-lined chestnut border larvae feed under the bark and destroy the nutrient and water conducting tissues (i.e., the phloem and xylem). Symptoms include dieback at the end of branches, sparse, small or discolored foliage, or leaves that wilt suddenly, turn uniformly brown and typically remain attached to the branches. Symptoms and Effects: Two-lined chestnut borers attack many types of oaks, including red, black, white and bur oaks. Larvae are slender, legless and white, and have a small, flattened area behind their heads. They have two yellow stripes along their backs. Environmental extremes (e.g., drought), construction injury to roots, soil compaction, road salt injury, defoliation by leaf-feeding insects, storm damage and weakening from disease are all stresses that predispose trees to two-lined chestnut borer attack.Īppearance: Adult two-lined chestnut borers are elongated, greenish-black metallic wood boring beetles that are about 1/5 to 1/2 inch in length. This insect is attracted to stressed and weakened oaks. The most important insect cause of oak mortality is the two-lined chestnut borer ( Agrilus bilineatus). Phil Pellitteri, UW Insect Diagnostic Lab The relationships of the merlin are not resolved to satisfaction. The wizard's name is an English cognate of the Welsh name “ Myrddin” and is unrelated to the name of the bird. Īlhough the merlin shares its name with the wizard Merlin prominent in Arthurian legendry, the bird is not named after the wizard. The species was once known as 'pigeon hawk' in North America. Wycliffe's Bible, around 1382, mentions An Egle, & agriffyn, & a merlyon. There are related Germanic words derived through older forms such as Middle Dutch smeerle, Old High German smerle and Old Icelandic smyrill. The name "merlin" is derived from Old French esmerillon via Anglo-Norman merilun or meriliun. If two species of merlins are recognized, the Old World birds would thus bear the scientific name F. Thirteen years after Linnaeus's description Marmaduke Tunstall recognized the Eurasian birds as a distinct taxon Falco aesalon in his Ornithologica Britannica. The species name columbarius is Latin for "of doves" from "columba", "dove". The genus name is Late Latin falco derives from falx, falcis, a sickle, referring to the claws of the bird. Based on this description, in 1758 Carl Linnaeus included the species in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae and introduced the present binomial name Falco columbarius with the type locality as "America". The merlin was described and illustrated by the English naturalist Mark Catesby (as the "pigeon hawk") in his Natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands published in 1729–1732. In recent decades merlin populations in North America have been significantly increasing, with some merlins becoming so well adapted to city life that they forgo migration. The merlin has for centuries been well regarded as a falconry bird. They are swift fliers and skilled hunters which specialize in preying on small birds in the size range of sparrows to quail. Males typically have wingspans of 53–58 centimetres (21–23 in), with females being slightly larger. A bird of prey once known colloquially as a pigeon hawk in North America, the merlin breeds in the northern Holarctic some migrate to subtropical and northern tropical regions in winter. The merlin ( Falco columbarius) is a small species of falcon from the Northern Hemisphere, with numerous subspecies throughout North America and Eurasia. They typically alternate between a few flaps and gliding.Falco aesalon Tunstall, 1771 (but see text) Accipiter hawks, such as Cooper’s and sharp-shinned, have short, rounded wings and longer tails, and they are mostly seen in wooded areas. American kestrels are smaller and always have two prominent black vertical stripes on their faces, while the merlin’s single mustache stripe is faint. Peregrine and prairie falcons are much larger. Similar species: Like other falcons, merlins have long, narrow, pointed wings that typically bend back sharply at the “wrist.” But in flight, seen from below, their tails look darker and are more boldly banded than our other falcons. Merlins in flight flap quickly and continually and rarely glide. The larger and paler Great Plains form of the Merlin is regular in western Missouri. An indistinct moustache streak is usually present. The tail is dark with narrow light bands. The adult male merlin is blue-gray above and heavily streaked below. Limbo was an ultra stylistic, monotone platformer that was much more than what it appeared to be. Playdead took the gaming scene by storm in 2010 with the Xbox 360 exclusive Limbo that would open the door for indie games in the years that follow. Whatever game Arnt Jensen and the rest of playdead is currently working on now isn’t necessarily going to be worse or better because of these changes in personnel but it will be different. When a company loses this much of its core talent, it can’t just be replaced to form the same thing, it will be different. Their debut title, Cocoon, is due out in 2023 and in the words of the studio is Legend of Zelda meets Portal.Īccording to Dino Patti, when talking to GamesBeat in 2017, playdead was around 13-15 people when Limbo shipped as playdead liked to keep the team lean and contract out when needed. Jeppe Carlson who was the lead gameplay designer on both Limbo and Inside also left the company to found Geometric Interactive with fellow playdead programmer and composer, Jakob Schmid. Co-founder Dino Patti left after what was reported as creative differences with co founder Arnt Jensen and would eventually go on to co-found Jumpship with their debut title Somerville releasing at the end of 2022. Major pillars would begin to leave the indie Danish studio. Good things don’t last forever and after Inside shipped in 2016, playdead would never be the same again. I show here that an ordinary grinding stone can be used. It can be seen that the stone will only grind one of the two flutes. The single knob at the back will adjust the whole table forward and backwards. The front knob will adjust the fence left and right for a fraction of a milimeter per turn. You can see the fence is locked so that the block can be pushed forward and backwards at exactly the same angle. It is set up that the cutting edge is parallel with the table floor, so that I can rotate the block 180 degrees so that both flutes are grounded exactly the same.Īnother view. I have set the 6mm two flute cutter in the block. I have also added a bearing block to the friction knob for strength. A wider fence will not have an influence on the rig’s performance or ability. The fence is wider than the original plan, due to non-availability of the correct material. I must still add the handled lever studs. As said, it may be an overkill, but I may need it in future. The table can now be rotated, Tilted forward, backward, right and left for almost 90 degrees. I added a few features similar than the advanced rest. The upright pillar is shortened and rotated 90 degrees, seen from the top. I used longer M3 screws and therefore the tapping was easier and also stronger due to the longer thread. I have drilled the M3 holes right through the table and could use a one tap set. The fact that the dials are brass is not changing the appearance and neither the abilities. If it is not an overkill, I have the ability. It may be an overkill, but I have not used the design before and will only know later. I will change the design to allow more extreme movement abilities. Those who made this rest, or those who studied the design in detail, will notice that I turned the table 90 degrees. I will at a later stage replace it with a proper steel one, to the longer length. I made the dial knobs from brass and the carrier as well due to the shortage of material for the carrier. The Rest mounted on the pillar, showing the bottom side. It is working like a charm and was inexpensive. I purchased a ball racer and annealed it before I drilled and tapped the hole to M6 standards. Here in South Africa, the plastic Phenol balls are only available in quantities of 10 and therefore very expensive. The making of the rest is straight forward. My progress on the making of the rest can be seen here: Hall’s web page, the article is described, as well as a few videos are presented on how to use the rest and the various jigs. The book give a full plan and description with photographs on how to make it, as well as on how to use it. It can be found by doing a search on the Internet. You have to purchase your own copy of the book by Harold Hall to get the plans of the rest, rigs and the adaption of the bench grinder. This tool rest allows you to be able to present your tools to a grinder wheel at the correct angle by way of clamping with the jig. No milling machine is needed, although the making will be easier if you do have a milling machine, or access to one. This tool rest can be made on a lathe only. I decided on the basic tool rest of Mr Harold Hall. I decided that I agree with a lot of people who sharpen their own equipment with the proper tool rest and jigs. I have read a lot of articles, together with my own experience in cutting my own lathe tools and my own experience on my drill bit sharpening. I do not have the funds to purchase a tool & cutter grinder, nor have the time to build one. Check the web to see that it is centered and not too wide.As the home user of a lathe and milling Machine, I have long ago identified the need to be able to sharpen my own milling cutters and properly sharpen drill bits and lathe tools. Finally, touch the cutting edge on both sides to the wheel and roll the drill to smooth the top of the drill from the cutting edge over the shoulder and off the back end. Make the angle a little steeper and touch the area behind the cutting edge to the wheel on both sides to reduce the shoulder on both sides. Touch the other cutting edge to the wheel. Rotate the drill 180 degrees without changing the angle. In summary, hold the drill at the right angle. Sometimes I need to sharpen one a couple of times to get it close enough to right. A couple of years ago I saw a video that made sharpening drills by hand easy and have been doing that ever since. Another option would be to get a new abrasive wheel and use you old wheel for rough work. I know that is not recommended practice, but you can probably get a way with it for sharpening a few drills now and then. It seems one option would be to remount the sharpening guide so the bit touches the side of the grinding wheel. I am glad to know you have been able to use this. |
